Report: Bromley arrived at about six in the morning with all their shiny kit and bits of stuff to run round during warm-up. I have to say, speaking personally, that they are a credit to this league - the kind of hard-working, committed group of players who have made the absolute most out of themselves. Most of them probably haven't played National League, and they really deserve their chance. It was quite refreshing, in a way. We at Spencer all carry on playing for the love of the game, but it's terrific that there are people, even at this level, who regard it as a challenge, and I know we all wish them the best.
After the comical warm-up (during which Spencer jogged around gently for nearly five minutes, but were very warm from the excitement of watching the seconds lose unluckily in a thriller against Canterbury (because we are the kind of people for whom supporting our mates is what counts)), the game got going. Gosh were those Bromley guys ever up for it! They sprinted all over the place like little mechanical dolls, and it was great fun for the spectator to see how that kind of approach interacted with Spencer's looser, more attractive attitude to the game.
The score at half time was 2-0 to Bromley, I think, with both goals coming within a minute of Adam Laird being removed. He said this was because of the hard work he had been doing defending from the front. This is not likely, but it's hard to argue with the statistics. Spencer were down to ten players after Ian was sent on for Dan Pink in nets after Dan cheated.
The second half was a very even affair, with Bromley going 3-0 up and then being dragged back to 3-2. A few crucial decisions went Bromley's way, including the late sending off of little Roger Catchpole during a period of Spencer dominance. These mistakes were particularly ironic in what was, on the whole, a very well refereed game, and both upires chatted about their decisions sensibly afterwards. They were a credit to their profession.
The large crowd was wildly excited by the game, which was played at a fast pace and in a great spirit. The pace was down to Bromley, of course. I tell you, those guys run and run! It's tiring just watching them!
Anyway, it was a pleasure to be involved. I hope Bromley go up because they deserve their chance, and we can see how disappointed they would be if they didn't get it. The rest of us can focus on the important business of getting Portsmouth relegated so we don't have to waste all our time travelling to the South Coast.
You can't teach goalscoring.
